FAQs
Do I need a boiler service?
A boiler service is the best way to keep your boiler working and working to its most efficient. Regular maintenance of your boiler reduces the risk of that inconvenient boiler breakdown and helps lengthen the life span of your boiler. Most importantly boiler servicing keeps you safe and healthy. Carbon monoxide is a real danger to anyone with a fuel burning device in their home.
How long will a boiler service last?
On average a service will take an hour and a half but could take longer if your boiler requires a full strip down and clean.
Why is my flame on my boiler burning yellow?
If your boiler pilot light is burning yellow this could mean the gas to air mix in the boiler is wrong and too much air is going into the system. We advise you that if this happening to switch off the machine and the gas supply and call a Gas safety register engineer here at Another Plumber.
Why is my boiler making a strange noise?
Boiler noise can be caused for a variety of reasons. Vibrations, whistling or humming can be caused due to blockage, trapped air, a faulty pump or fan, lack of water in the system, loss of pressure. You should not attempt any boiler repairs yourself – boilers can become very dangerous in the wrong hands so it is imperative that you call a gas safety registered engineer to deal with your problems. All our engineers are gas safety registered and are ready to help with all your boiler problems.
Should I have my boiler repaired or replaced?
Through open and honest discussion, Another Plumber can help you make the right decision depending on what has been diagnosed the problem with your boiler.
Does a system clean really help?
If your heating system does need to be power cleaned and you decide not to do it then the problems will almost certainly get worse. The circulation through the pipes and the radiators will slow until very little hot water gets through. This means that the house won’t heat up and the boiler will be working for no real reason. The result of this is that energy will be wasted and in the long run money will be wasted as well.
Why aren’t my radiators heating up?
If your radiators aren’t heating up properly, this can be for a number of reasons.
None of the radiators are working
If none of your radiators are working, this is probably an issue with your boiler or central heating controls.
Check that your room thermostat is set correctly and remember that there may be different room thermostats for different parts of the property.
Check that your timer or programmer is working properly.
Some radiators aren’t heating up
If one or two of your radiators aren’t heating up, or are too hot, try adjusting the valves on the radiators. Thermostatic radiator valves (which usually have numbers around the circumference) can be adjusted to the heat you need. If no change occurs after you’ve adjusted the settings, the radiator valve may be faulty.
If the whole of radiators in parts of your house are cool, this may be due to the pump being insufficiently strong to ensure that the heat reaches all radiators. The boiler will heat up the radiators closest to it first so, to allow heat to reach the furthest radiators, you may need to partially tighten the valves on the warmer radiators closer to the boiler.
If parts of your radiators are cool (and the cool patches move from one radiator to the next) then this may be due to air in the central heating system. This is most likely if the cool patches are towards the top of the radiator. You can try bleeding the radiators to release the air.
If the cool patches are toward the bottom of the radiator, this more likely to be due to a build up of rust or sludge in your system, and it may need cleaning.
